Balance

Both sides of a flounder are needed to complete the fish. The Taoist view holds that the entire universe consists of balanced, complementary pairs. Night and day, hot and cold, yin and yang define and balance one another.

The calligraphic inscription contains six lines from Chapter 2 of the Tao Te Ching (read vertically from right to left):

“Existence and non-existence give birth to one another.
Difficult and easy complete each other.
Long and short contrast each other.
High and low support one another.
Tone and melody harmonize one another.
Front and back accompany one another.”
